Air Force restructures CIO to bring business, IT and data closer together

The Air Force is the second military service to restructure its chief information officer's role by moving it to a higher level in the organization. The service named Undersecretary Matt Donovan as its new CIO to go along with his current role as the chief management officer. And while there is more to finalize around the Air Force's restructuring efforts, Bill Marion, the Air Force's deputy CIO, said the work continues to modernize its network and systems. The State Department's approach to modernizing its technology is focused on two major shifts: The first is centralization of back-office or commodity IT. The second is all about consuming IT-as-a-service. Ken Rogers, the State Department's deputy chief information officer for business management and planning, said State's strategy is all about getting off of the buy, build and maintain train. Based on the two-year analysis, State CIO Karen Mummaw published the agency's new strategy in June that lays out the implementation plan to get the value proposition from cloud services.
