Ben Greenfield Fitness: Diet, Fat Loss and Performance

Maximize Oxygen Utilization Efficiency, Simulate High Altitude Training, Get The Cardiovascular Capacity of a Navy SEAL & More With "The Oxygen Advantage" Author Patrick McKeown. It's no secret that I'm somewhat obsessed with breathing. In the past years I've written articles on everything from combining ketosis, breath holds and freediving, to how to make your own hyperbaric "exercise with oxygen therapy" (EWOT) device, to Wim Hof style breathing for cold thermogenesis to underwater workouts with Laird Hamilton to making yourself high with holotropic breathwork to the use of fancy breath strips and "Turbine" devices to enhance nasal breathing during both exercise and sleep... ...and recorded plenty of podcasts with breathing experts too. Several years ago, Wim Hof appeared on the BenGreenfieldFitness show for one of his first ever podcasts, entitled "Conquer The Cold And Get Quantum Leaps In Performance In This Exclusive Interview With The Amazing Iceman Wim Hof". He came back again for "The Iceman Returns: Wim Hof On Climbing Frigid Mountains In Underwear, Eating Only Once A Day, Activating Hormones With Breathing & More." Then there's my interview with freediving expert Ted Harty "Freediving, Breathholding, Iceman Wim Hof, Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible Training, How To Use Static Apnea Tables & More!" along with my performance breathing interview with Brian Mackenzie on "How To Hold Your Breath For Four Minutes, Training Mask Myths, Performance Breathing & More". Just a few months ago, I interviewed Dr. Belisa Vranich for the episode "Pee Strips, Power Lungs & Pulse Oximeters: How To Flip The Switch On Your Body's Own Natural Ability To Heal Itself (& Little-Known Ways To Breathe Better)." And then there's this epic XPT performance breathing workshop you can join me at in Kauai, Hawaii Dec 7-10, where guys like me, Brain Mackenzie and Laird Hamilton will teach you every form of breathwork on the face of the planet. Today's guest is yet another oxygen expert, and the author of The Oxygen Advantage, one of the best breathing books I've read. In The Oxygen Advantage, the man who has trained over 5,000 people?including Olympic and professional athletes?in reduced breathing exercises, shares his scientifically validated techniques to help you breathe more efficiently. His name is Patrick McKeown, and in his book, you learn everything from the fundamental relationship between oxygen and the body, to how to use a Body Oxygen Level Test (BOLT) to determine how efficiently your body uses oxygen to how to increase your BOLT score by using light breathing exercises and learning how to simulate high altitude training, along with techniques used by Navy SEALs and professional athletes to help increase endurance, weight loss, and vital red blood cells to dramatically improve cardiovascular fitness. Patrick McKeown completed his clinical training in the Buteyko Breathing Method at the Buteyko Clinic, Moscow, Russia in 2002 and was accredited by the late Professor Konstantin Buteyko. Patrick has spent the last 15 years working with tens of thousands of children and adults worldwide, who experience breathing pattern disorders, sleep disordered breathing and anxiety. To date, he has written eight books on the subject, including Close Your Mouth, Anxiety Free: Stop Worrying and Quieten Your Mind, Asthma Free Naturally, Always Breathe Correctly and Sleep with Buteyko. To date, Patrick has worked with some of the top athletes in the world across a variety of sports including tennis, cycling, American Football, MMA and track and field. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why we have always thought shallow underbreathing was a health problem, but why Patrick says the opposite: that's it's chronic overbreathing that is the issue...[9:18] -The scientifically proven benefits of nasal breathing...[13:20] -The fascinating links between acidity, alkalinity, overbreathing and weight gain...[19:30] -What happens if you're breathing 'too much' for shorter periods of time, like during exercise...[22:50] -What the BOLT measurement is and why it's important that you have a long BOLT measurement...[28:56] -Why Patrick is such a fan of humming...[32:00] -The best simple exercise you can do to increase breathing efficiency and increase your BOLT score...[37:00] -The oxygen saturation percentage level you need to get to before you start getting the benefits of holding your breath during exercise...[46:40] -The sprint and track breathholding workouts Patrick implements with the athletes he coaches...[48:00] -A quick breathing trick you can use to decongest congestion from a head cold...[51:45] -A baking soda, apple cider vinegar and carbonated water hack you can use to increase your breathhold time...[55:35] -Why you may want to consider taping your mouth shut while you sleep...[58:25] -How the way you breathe actually changes the structure of your face...[60:25] -Why the naked mole rat lives so long, and what this has to do with breathing...[64:30] -And much more! Do you suffer from physical pain relating to your writing life? Are you struggling with back pain, weight gain related to sedentary working, anxiety, depression, sleep problems, neck pain, eye strain, stress, loneliness, digestive issues, or repetitive strain injury? These are the most common issues reported by writers and if you struggle with any of them, you are not alone. Let's face it: writing (and especially typing on a computer) is not a physically healthy activity, but if you want a long-term writing career, then you need to look after your body. Awhile back, I featured author Joanna Penn on the podcast. Joanna has been through her own pain journey over the last six years. She used to get crippling migraines that sent her to a dark room, and back pain so bad that she couldn't sleep, as well as stress levels so high that she wasn't able to breathe normally. Now, her back pain, migraines and repetitive strain injuries (including elbow pain) have almost gone completely, and she manages her writing life in a far healthier way than ever before. I was planning on having her share her personal journey and insights with you in her new book "The Healthy Writer" once again on the podcast. However, due to some technical difficulties on her end, she was unable to join the call. However, I was able to talk to her co-author for this book was Dr. Euan Lawson, who also shares his insights into how you can reduce pain, improve health and build a writing career for the long term. Euan Lawson is a British medical doctor and a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners. He's ex-British Army and enjoys fell running. During my last podcast discussion with Joanna, you learned: -How Joanna developed chronic repetitive motion injuries in her wrist, and why ergonomic keyboards and an ergonomic computer mouse weren't working for her... -Why Joanna decided to go way above and beyond simply using a standing workstation or treadmill desk... -How Joanna is simultaneously working on multiple books while also training for an ultramarathon... -Whether you can really, truly be creative while standing or walking, and why it's a myth that you need to sit to write effectively... -The exact tools, microphones and software that Joanna has found to work very well for dictation... -A book that will teach you exactly how to dictate quickly and effectively... -How to  "train" your computer to recognize your voice and accent... -How to enhance productivity with ambient noise and focus apps... -And much more! A few weeks ago, a friend emailed me and said: "I just got off the phone with John Jaquish, PhD, the inventor of something called the X3 bar. He is an inventor, author, and scientist who stumbled upon his life's mission to promote bone health and advance osteogenic loading research after his mother was diagnosed with osteoporosis. Determined to help her and others suffering from musculoskeletal conditions and pain, John developed amazing biotechnology devices that increase bone density, strengthen muscles, and improve stability while reducing injury risk." The email went on to describe how you could use John's research to increase your bone density in just 10 minutes a week, and how you can put on more muscle in less time by leveraging John's biomedical engineering wisdom - and this thing called an X3 Bar that he invented. So I looked into Dr. Jaquish, and also got an X3 Bar for myself to play around with. Turns out, he began his experience in life sciences after being told by his Mother that she had been diagnosed with osteoporosis. John, in an effort to help his mother, created a device to place axial loading through bone to safely cause osteogenic loading events. The device was to trigger the effects of high-impact loading, but without the risk of injury. After successfully reversing his Mother's osteoporosis, as part of his doctoral dissertation in biomedical engineering research at Rushmore University, he conducted four years of testing with human subjects focused on user comfort, biomechanics, and optimal musculoskeletal stimulation. Next, the device he designed was put into production, and has since been placed in over 240 clinics worldwide. Osteogenic loading has now helped over 12,000 individuals with their bone health. Published data has shown, treatment with this osteogenic loading device has resulted in over 14% gains in bone density in both the spine and hip over one year of once-weekly treatment. Dr. Jaquish is currently advancing osteogenic loading research and speaking worldwide about its implications, as well as developing other biotechnology devices and products that will aid in the advanced health and wellbeing of people all around the world. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of American Bone Health, and the editorial boards of the Journal of Steroids and Hormonal Science, and Diabetes Open. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How John developed an osteogenic loading device to fix his mother's osteoporosis... 7:40 -How the X3 Bar came to be invented and the fascinating science behind it... 12:56 -The use of variable resistance training to get 3x increases in power and strength... 20:25 -The special kind of elastic bands that John integrated into the X3 Bar... 23:50 -The effect of variable resistance training on growth hormone and testosterone... 36:13 -What kind of workouts you would do on it if you're doing the 10 minute workout once per day... 49:05 -What John's 10 minute 1x/day workout looks like... 50:31 -Ways that you can "biohack" variable resistance training with tools such as vibration, blood flow restriction, balance board... 58:29 -And much more! 01:35:22 5/2/2018  I first interviewed Thomas DeLauer in the episode The Ultimate Guide To Quelling Inflammation: Why Your Curcumin May Not Work, Surprising Effects Of Ginger Oil, Vegan Fish Oil Options & Much More! Thomas is one of the leading experts in the world of chronic inflammation as well as the response of the human body to a low-carb diet. He is noted for his personal transformation from a 280-pound overweight corporate executive to not only being on the cover of health and fitness magazines worldwide but pioneering some of the mainstream awareness of auto-immune diseases and inflammation in general! Thomas has been highlighted in over 20 magazines showcasing his transformation and has been featured worldwide on the cover of Ironman Magazine, Muscle and Performance Magazine, Natural Muscle Magazine, ICON Magazine, Platform Magazine and Ironman Japan. His background is in Sports Psychology, although it is this passion for psychology coupled with a career in healthcare as a physician recruiter and owner of an ancillary lab services company that sparked his love for nutritional science and what makes the body tick. He is currently working on a project in the 2nd phase of trials with Doctors at UCLA to identify a strain of bacteria that may help modulate inflammation within the body. It is partially due to his involvement in this study that he has developed such an interest in the world of cellular inflammation in the first place. 01:00:02 4/25/2018 Prepare to take the deepest dive you ever have into the art of preparing the perfect cup of coffee... ...including optimizing criteria such as the caffeine content, the amount of healthy chlorogenic acid in the brew, the antioxidants, the effect on blood lipids and much more. My guest on today's podcast, Adel Moussa, recently investigated the impressive host of coffee data he came up with after dozens of hours he spent on Google Scholar and PubMed. And he indeed found some very, very interesting coffee tips you're about to discover in today's podcast. As a trained physicist Adel, found his passion for nutrition and exercise science early during his studies when the lack of reliable, evidence-based information about supplements and training on the internet motivated him to start blogging about these topics. Over the years, his blog,, has accumulated more than 2300 fully-referenced articles and became one of the go-to sources for well-referenced, unbiased information about the latest and most relevant studies in the realms of diet, health, and fitness. In spite of that, the work Adel puts into the maintenance of the website, and the Facebook news-channel (, as well as his work as a reviewer for the "Examine Research Digest", are still a hobby for him - one that does, however, leave enough time to hit the gym several times a week. 01:02:39 4/20/2018 My guest on today's podcast is one fascinating dude. His name is Andrew Salisbury, and originally (after setting the world record for the world's longest bungee jump), he founded Corsidian, which grew to be the largest provider of call center software in Latin America. After Corsidian installations in 13 countries and offices in 5, Andrew sold the company in 2011.  He then turned to coffee. It was clear to Andrew that coffee had tremendous health benefits, and decided to work with the best in defining what makes coffee so good for you, and to figure out how to get rid of notorious bad stuff in coffee such as pesticides, yeast, mold and a series of flavor imperfections.  He worked with a Professor named Adriana Farah for over 18 months to lab test coffees and to figure out how to source the right beans, with no consideration for cost and convenience, with the correct roast curve, organic source and freshness. He then validated his coffee against 49 of the most popular brands in the market. His goal was to decide on every step of the production chain what decision would avoid damage and maintain antioxidants in the coffee. That is not the driver for most decisions about coffee because the concern normally is taste and cost. Andrew asked a different question and the answers led him to decisions not normally made by coffee companies. The result was a coffee called "Purity", that is not the result of what Andrew did in the lab but the result of over 30 choices in the production chain prioritizing health above everything without exception. Andrew personally made every one of those decisions and explains why on today's podcast, explaining how he asked different coffee questions to the best experts in the industry, not just coffee scientists but from the farmers and everyone else involved in every step of production. He is truly knowledgeable about the difference in the process from bean to cup as it relates to the compounds that hurt or harm health, and during our discussion, you'll discover: -The mysterious debilitating illness that Amber's wife experienced while drinking 4-6 cups of coffee a day...[12:15] -Why Andrew began to study coffee at the Vanderbilt University's Institute of Coffee Studies...[14:30] -What science knows about coffee that most consumers don't and why coffee has gotten a bad rap as early as the 1950's...[15:35] -Why coffee has gotten such a bad rap of late in California due to acrylamide levels...[17:35] -The host of chronic diseases that coffee can control or eliminate risk for...[19:40] -How to concentrate levels of chlorogenic acid in coffee to maximize antioxidant levels...[27:30] -The shocking results of the laboratory results that Andrew conducted on 49 different coffees...[30:40] -The unique three step process used to select coffees that allow for extreme flavors combined with a crystal clean health profile...[42:15] -How you can lower the caffeine content of coffee while maximizing antioxidants and taste...[49:15] -Why the highest-standard packaging method is called nitrogen flushing to gain the height of freshness...[54:00] -And much more!
